This summer, I had the privilege of discovering two truly exceptional European resorts: Villa Eden in Merano Italy, and the Spirit Hotel Thermal Spa in Sárvár Hungary.
Two very different destinations, yet they share the same philosophy: privately owned, family-run properties where hospitality, health, preventive care, and well-being are intimately intertwined. Two establishments with a soul, a vision, and a strong identity.
Villa Eden, Merano — The Discreet Art of Prevention
“Long before longevity became a global conversation, Villa Eden was already exploring the art of prevention.”
Long before longevity became a universal topic, Villa Eden was already cultivating the art of prevention.
This family-run establishment, founded in the 1970s under the guidance of Angelika’s father, has always placed holistic health and prevention at the heart of its philosophy. Today, Angelika Schmid and Hannes Illmer carry on this vision through their “Timeless Longevity” concept, combining preventive medicine, aesthetics, nutrition, wellness, and cutting-edge technologies.
But Villa Eden is much more than a MediSpa. What particularly struck me was its quiet, deeply human luxury.
Here, nothing is standardized. Each guest is treated as an individual, with discretion, precision, and care. Some therapists have been working here for over twenty-five years, creating that rare sense of continuity that transforms a hotel stay into a truly personal experience.
The cuisine is fully in line with this philosophy: light, refined, and flavorful, it perfectly demonstrates that health and pleasure can go hand in hand.
Villa Eden does not seek to impress. It supports, cares for, and gives guests the rare feeling of truly being welcomed.
Spirit Hotel, Sárvár – Where Thermal Baths Meet the Contemporary MediSpa
About an hour and a half from Vienna, Sárvár is a small Hungarian town renowned for its castle, thermal baths, and natural surroundings.
Set against this backdrop is the Spirit Hotel Thermal Spa, another privately and family-owned property where luxury, wellness, tranquility, and hospitality come together.
Its spectacular 10,000 m² Oasis Spa forms the heart of the resort: 22 indoor and outdoor pools, thermal pools, a 25-meter lap pool, hot tubs, and an extensive sauna area offering nine different experiences.
Another unique feature of the Spirit Spa is its own medicinal water spring, which is used in numerous therapeutic treatments. More than 100 wellness and beauty treatments complement a medical approach supported by modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.
I particularly appreciated the philosophy of the chief physician, Dr. Ákos Tatár, who advocates for a patient-centered approach to medicine rather than one focused on the disease, integrating general medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and Eastern medicine.
The experience naturally extends to the dining table, with a culinary offering that blends Hungarian specialties, international cuisine, and lighter options tailored to the wellness experience.
Two establishments, one shared conviction
Villa Eden and Spirit Hotel do not share the same history, the same atmosphere, or the same approach to wellness.
But both demonstrate something that I believe is essential for the future of our industry: the MediSpa of tomorrow cannot be limited to technology or treatments alone. It must combine medical expertise, prevention, hospitality, personalization, and above all, a genuine human touch.
Two very different establishments, but two experiences I highly recommend discovering.
I wish you were there.
